The Summer I Turned Pretty: Season 2 Review

Season two of The Summer I Turned Pretty was better than the first. Not only was the plot deeper, but the acting also got better. We were introduced to two new characters: Skye and Julia. I can’t decide on who is more insufferable, Julia or Skye. Skye had multiple moments where I had to put my phone down and take a break from the series because of her cringe-worthy remarks. What shook me to my core was when Skye said, “My mom isn’t evil, Conrad. And your mom wasn’t a saint.”
My jaw dropped. At one point, I was yelling at them through my phone. I didn’t understand the significance of their character. Like, their whole “purpose” was to figure out the apple bong and have a spark with Cam Cameron. I’ve talked to all my friends about this series, and we all agreed that Skye’s character was cringey and that they didn’t contribute much to the plot—justice for Cam Cameron. Julia, on the other hand, was straight-up annoying.

I thought it was such a low move that she moved Susanah’s belongings while the kids were on the pier. I could go on about these side characters, but I NEED to discuss this season’s love triangle. We start the season with “See you again” by Tyler, the Creator. The way I screamed when I heard the song’s intro play while it showed a moment of Belly and Conrad. I was CRUSHED when it panned into Belly’s face at school to discover that those moments were daydreams and that Susunah was dead and she and Conrad were no longer together. Steven graduates high school, they go to a party, blah blah blah.
It’s all filler until Belly gets Jerimiah’s call saying that Conrad is “missing.” Belly sneaks away to help Jerimiah find Conrad, and the tension in the car is unbearable. This part made me dislike Jerimiah a bit. His tire popped, and he basically threw a fit. At that moment, you could tell Jerimiah was pissed that he got heartbroken by Belly when she picked his brother instead of him, but can I blame him? Belly switches up every episode on which brother she likes best. Belly is the reason for all the drama, but we all love a messy main character. Anyways, Belly fixes the tire and the tension surrounding her and Jerimiah. They make up and make their way towards Brown.

I’m just going to be straightforward and not sum up what happened this season since you’ve probably already watched it. Conrad and Belly barely had any chemistry this season. Like, the most exciting part was Belly saying “Connie baby” to Conrad in the middle of Party City. What made me question my belief in “Team Conrad” was how he acted after seeing Jerimiah and Belly making out. “Did you kiss him just to get my attention?”
LIKE? Belly is better than me because I would’ve slapped him. LIKE WHO SAYS THAT?
And the car ride after that was horrible. Conrad acted like a brat, as if he was entitled to keep Belly to himself after breaking up with her.

My favorite part of the whole season was the motel scene. Not only did we see Belly evict Conrad from her heart, finally, but we also saw how much Jerimiah cared for her. What completely switched me from Team Conrad to Team Jerimiah was Jerimiah’s little “speech” about how he wants what’s best for Belly. “If she picks you, then…I’ll let her go. If it were anyone else in the world, I’d fight like hell, but if you’re what she needs, I won’t get in the way again.”
I MELTED.
I thought it was so sweet and cute how Jerimiah wants Belly to be with the brother she wants the most. He gives her total control over which brother to have, which is kind of hot. At night, Conrad confesses to Belly that he still feels for her, and Belly ignores him. This leads to Belly being ready to commit to Jerimiah.

In conclusion, as an ex-Belrad shipper, I am happy to say I have converted to Team Jellyfish. Jerimiah and Belly have a deeper bond because they were close friends before the relationship. This season is much better than the first, but it needs more work.
*Cough cough*
The acting.
But apart from that, it’s a solid 3.5/5. It has a relatable teen feel that doesn’t seem forced, making it an easy binge.
