The Manatee High cheerleaders are bringing out their spirit for the 2018/2019 football season by giving all varsity football players a little treat before each game. The tradition of “football grams” started with past squads but has gotten lost throughout the years. The current cheer team is passionate about the players and their success throughout this school year so they want to show their support. Grams are just another way for them to say good luck to the boys the morning of a game.

“I feel like grams are important because it shows our support and connection with the football players,” said Sara Filips, a senior cheerleader.

Every Thursday night, after the football team wraps up their practice and heads home, the cheerleaders begin their surprise. The head football coach, Yusuf Shakir, patiently waits for the cheer team to end practice to give them access to the locker room. Once all the boys are clear, all of the varsity cheerleaders go to their assigned football player’s locker to decorate it and give them a Gatorade along with a snack and candy of choice. Some of the girls even choose to write shorts notes; for example, quotes from famous athletes or original humorous poems to get them motivated. Then, on Friday morning before school when they step inside the locker room to receive their gram they feel energized and pumped for the game later on in the day.

A response after the first two games from football player Wesley Coleman was, “I enjoy looking forward to walking into the locker room and seeing snacks, it makes game day even more enjoyable.”

This tradition is a way to bring different sports together to grow as a school and become more involved with each other. It also is a great opportunity to meet new peers and connect with the players the cheerleaders are cheering for.
