The 2020 boys varsity lacrosse team is going out with a bang this year, already winning one of their first home games. There are 28 boys on the team this year and they are ready to dominate this season.

The boys head varsity coach this year is Many Cruz. Cruz played for three years at SUNY Cortland and was a member of the D2 National Championship Team in 1975. Cruz and his family moved to Florida in 1976. He finished school at USF, where he and his brother led the team to  back to back two year State Club Championship, winning one. Cruz got into coaching while at USF. He has also coached middle school teams in Lakewood Ranch, and after two years, he moved up to coach high school where he coached at Sarasota Military Academy and St. Stephens. Head Coach Cruz is assisted by Steve Asroff and Scott Kallins this season.

“I’m really excited for this season, and I’m ready to give it all I’ve got for senior year. Hopefully, we can come out with some wins this year and show what we’ve got on the field,” said senior captain Ryan Ciolino.

Girls Varsity Lacrosse

The girls are working hard this season with wanting to make it to the final round of districts. Last year the girls made it to the first round of districts and had a close loss against Riverview. This year the team wants to accomplish great things and have fun along the way.

The girls varsity coach this year is Kristy Harris. Coach Harris is from Long Island and started playing when she was in 7th grade at Smithtown Middle School. She played all four years on Varsity and went on to Join the Empire State team. Harris has coached many undefeated seasons as the Head Coach for Shoreham Wading Lacrosse in New York and locally at Monster’s Lacrosse in Lakewood Ranch. She was the JV coach at Out of Door Academy and led them to an undefeated season in 2015, and was also an assistant coach to their varsity team the following two years. Coach Harris has lead many lacrosse clinics in Manatee and Sarasota counties as well as helping at Wildcats Lacrosse. Harris has also been a Florida “Teacher of the Year” nominee and has been a teacher in Manatee County for 13 years. Now she has joined her husband to sell real estate. The team is excited to have her on board, and they are excited for this season with her.

“This year, I’m excited that I’m able to lead the team this year as a captain. I’m also looking forward to bonding and growing as a team with this great group of girls,” said senior captain Ali Gierhart.

Look pretty, play strong: The girls pose for their first team photo together. Their first game was held at St. Stephens on Feb. 20th. “Lacrosse season is something I look forward to every year, and I’m truly excited to spend my last year getting better as a player and as a teammate to the girls,” said senior Rylie Cunneen.
