Two people were killed in a collision between two semi-trucks, which triggered another crash involving another semi-truck and a Wisconsin State Patrol squad car.
According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, an SUV was driving eastbound on I-94 near Tomah shortly before 7 p.m. on Monday when it crossed the median and collided with two semi-trucks headed westbound.
Authorities said the two victims who perished in the SUV were a 26-year-old Minnesota lady and a 47-year-old Wisconsin man. Their names are now being concealed until the victims’ families may be contacted.
As a result of the collision, the semi-trucks wound up in the eastbound lanes of traffic. According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, both directions of I-94 were shut down for many hours until roughly 2:35 a.m. on Tuesday.
The semi-truck drivers involved in this collision are expected to live. The 56-year-old man from Michigan and the 43-year-old man from Minnesota were both transported to the hospital.
Shortly after the first incident involving the SUV and two semi trucks, another crash occurred in the area, injuring a state trooper. According to the Wisconsin State Patrol, around 9:55 p.m. on Monday, a 72-year-old semi-truck driver from Minnesota failed to follow the cones and flares set up to detour traffic around the initial crash.
The semi-truck driver rear-ended the state police squad car, injuring Trooper Smith. Trooper Smith was brought to the hospital after suffering head injuries in the incident, according to authorities; the truck driver reported no injuries.
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the crash. All lanes of I-94 are again open.
