WASHINGTON, D.C. — A new CBS News/YouGov poll has revealed that 70% of Americans believe President Donald Trump is fulfilling the promises he made during his campaign.

The poll, conducted between February 5 and 7, 2025, surveyed 2,175 adults across the United States and has a margin of error of ±2.5 percentage points.

Trump’s approval rating currently stands at 53%, with 31% strongly approving of his performance and 22% somewhat approving. On the other hand, 47% disapprove, including 38% who strongly disapprove and 9% who somewhat disapprove. The poll also found that 49% of respondents feel Trump is doing more than expected in his early weeks in office, while 41% believe he is performing as anticipated. Only 9% think he is doing less than expected.

Support for Key Policies

The poll also measured public approval for some of Trump’s major policies, revealing strong support in several areas:

Deportation Efforts: 59% of respondents approve of Trump’s immigration policies, including his efforts to deport undocumented immigrants.

Border Security: 64% support his decision to deploy troops to the U.S.-Mexico border to reinforce security.

Foreign Policy: 54% back his approach to the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict.

While these policies have strong backing, some of Trump’s decisions have received mixed reactions. For example, his plan to establish large deportation facilities has 52% opposition, with 48% in favor.

Public Perception of Trump

When asked to describe President Trump, respondents commonly used terms like “tough” (69%), “energetic” (63%), “focused” (60%), and “effective” (58%). However, 66% believe he is not doing enough to address the rising cost of living, a key concern for many Americans. Additionally, only 13% support his recent proposal to take over the Gaza Strip, while 47% oppose it.

Elon Musk’s Influence in Government

A controversial aspect of Trump’s governance has been his decision to grant Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk significant influence over government operations. Democrats have criticized the move, arguing that Musk has been given too much control over government spending and bureaucracy. However, the poll shows that 51% of Americans support Musk’s involvement in government operations, with 23% wanting him to have “a lot” of influence and 28% saying “some.” In contrast, 18% believe he should have “not much” influence, while 31% want no influence at all.

Comparisons to Previous Presidents

Historically, newly elected presidents enjoy a “honeymoon phase” with favorable approval ratings in their early days. For example, President Joe Biden saw high approval ratings in his first months before they plummeted following the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. Whether Trump can maintain his current levels of support remains to be seen.
