Minneapolis, MN – A Minneapolis man is recovering after being shot in the face while simply looking out of his window. The incident was part of a violent crime spree that took place early Tuesday morning, leaving two people injured and prompting an ongoing police investigation.

Crime Spree Turns Violent

According to the Minneapolis Police Department, three suspects engaged in a two-hour crime spree, breaking into multiple garages, carjacking a vehicle, and shooting two individuals. Surveillance footage captured the suspects in action, moments before the first shooting occurred on 25th Avenue South.

The video shows the suspects exiting a white sedan and breaking into a garage. After ransacking the property, they returned to the vehicle. It was at this moment that one of the suspects noticed something in the distance and fired a single gunshot.

Innocent Man Shot for Looking Out of His Window

That gunshot struck 54-year-old Boyd Hansen, a Minneapolis resident, who was inside his home at the time. According to his longtime girlfriend, Denise Ward, Hansen had heard a noise outside and went to his second-floor window to investigate. Tragically, one of the suspects saw him and fired a bullet that tore through his jaw, knocked out several of his teeth, and ultimately lodged in his shoulder.

Ward, who was downstairs at the time, did not hear the gunshot but quickly realized what had happened when she heard Hansen yelling, “Call 911! I’ve been shot!” She rushed upstairs to find him bleeding profusely, clutching a wad of paper towels to his face in an attempt to stop the bleeding.

Other Victims and Police Response

The suspects did not stop after shooting Hansen. During their crime spree, they also carried out a robbery on East Lake Street, where another man was shot in the chest. Authorities say this victim sustained potentially life-threatening injuries and was rushed to the hospital for emergency care.

Minneapolis police have confirmed that the suspects were involved in at least six different incidents that morning. While they have recovered two vehicles connected to the crimes, the three suspects remain at large.

Hansen’s Road to Recovery

Hansen was immediately taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery to remove the bullet from his shoulder. Doctors have planned another surgery later in the week to repair the damage to his jaw. Ward expressed gratitude that the injuries weren’t worse, acknowledging how close Hansen came to losing his life.

“There’s going to be a long road, but I’m thankful it went this way,” Ward said. “A couple inches up, it could have hit his eye and lodged in his brain. A couple inches down, it could have struck his aorta or spinal cord.”

Despite the trauma, Ward remains hopeful about Hansen’s recovery. She has been by his side throughout the ordeal, assisting with his medical care and hoping for justice to be served.
