Fatal Crash on Madison Road Claims Life of Retired Captain
On the evening of May 19, 2025, a serious three-vehicle accident occurred in Beloit, Wisconsin, resulting in the death of retired Rock County Sheriff’s Captain Jay Wood. The collision took place around 7:00 p.m. in the 1400 block of Madison Road.
Details of the Accident and Ongoing Investigation
According to the Beloit Police Department, a blue sedan rear-ended Wood’s tan sedan, causing it to veer into oncoming traffic and collide with another vehicle. Captain Wood was rushed to a local hospital but later died from his injuries.
The driver of the blue sedan, a 46-year-old Beloit resident, was cited for following too closely, driving without insurance, and lacking vehicle registration. Authorities are continuing their investigation and may file additional charges.

Captain Wood served the Rock County Sheriff’s Office from 1999 until his retirement in 2020. During his tenure, he rose from deputy to captain and was recognized for his leadership in launching the county’s first county-wide traffic enforcement campaign.
