62% of Gen Z respondents said they do not commonly engage in casual sex.

In contrast, 78% of millennials in 2004 admitted that their friends were open to commitment-free encounters.

Only 19% of millennials back then said their peers avoided casual hookups.

This marks a dramatic cultural shift from the early 2000s, when dating apps and hookup culture were at their peak.

Why Is Gen Z Rejecting Casual Sex?

Experts believe that this change in behavior is not solely due to morality or ethics, but rather influenced by social media, mental health concerns, and new perspectives on relationships.

The Influence of Social Media: Unlike previous generations, Gen Z has grown up with social media, where stories of toxic relationships and dating horror stories are widely shared. This has made them more cautious about who they engage with.

Technology and Anxiety: Increased screen time, social media pressures, and online dating burnout have made it harder for Gen Z to develop in-person connections. Some experts suggest they may be experiencing a “sex recession” due to these factors.

Changing Priorities: Many Gen Z individuals see career growth, mental health, and personal development as bigger priorities than casual dating.

61% of Gen Z respondents believe marriage is still relevant.

This is slightly higher than millennials in 2004, where 59% supported marriage.

However, the reason behind Gen Z’s openness to marriage is not rooted in traditional values.

Many Gen Zers see marriage as an experience rather than a lifelong commitment.

They acknowledge divorce as a possibility and do not view marriage as an unbreakable bond.

Some believe that because marriage is no longer seen as a “forever” thing, they are more willing to give it a try.

According to Charlie Sawyer, a 25-year-old media specialist, Gen Z doesn’t feel the need to follow a “normal path” in life, which means they are more open to experimenting with marriage, even if they believe it may not last forever.

Gen Z’s Views on Other Relationship Aspects

Attitudes Toward Pornography

40% of Gen Z respondents said their peers commonly watch online porn, while 36% said they do not.

Millennials, who grew up during the rise of digital pornography, reported a higher percentage (58%) engaging in it.

This suggests that Gen Z is consuming less adult content than millennials did at the same age.

Support for Transgender Rights

The survey also examined Gen Z’s stance on transgender inclusivity:

56% of Gen Z respondents support allowing trans women to use female restrooms.

61% believe schools should allow students to socially transition without parental consent.

These results indicate that Gen Z remains highly supportive of LGBTQ+ rights, even as they shift towards more traditional relationship values.
