A high-speed police pursuit in Des Moines ended dramatically Tuesday night after a suspect ditched a stolen truck and was bitten by a police K9 while attempting to flee on foot, according to the Des Moines Police Department (DMPD).
The incident took place on the evening of May 27, 2025, and led to the arrest of Zachary Rich, 35, who is now in custody following the tense standoff.
Pursuit of a Stolen Vehicle
According to officials, officers from DMPD were alerted to a stolen vehicle traveling through the city and initiated a traffic stop. Instead of complying, the driver sped off, prompting officers to begin a vehicle pursuit through Des Moines streets.
The chase, which reportedly involved multiple police units, concluded when the stolen truck came to a stop and the driver, later identified as Rich, fled the scene on foot in an attempt to avoid arrest.
K9 Unit Called in to Assist
As Rich tried to evade police officers on foot, a K9 unit was dispatched to track and apprehend him. Officers say the suspect ignored verbal commands to stop, and the police dog was deployed to bring him into custody.
The K9 caught up with Rich and bit him on the arm, allowing officers to make the arrest without further resistance. Officials confirmed that Rich received medical attention following the bite and was later transported for booking.
Charges Pending
As of Wednesday morning, formal charges against Rich had not yet been announced. However, police say the suspect could be facing multiple charges, including possession of a stolen vehicle, eluding law enforcement, and resisting arrest.
The Des Moines Police Department has stated that the investigation is ongoing and more details will be made public once charges are finalized.
Community and Police Response
The DMPD praised the work of its officers and K9 unit in safely concluding the pursuit. “The teamwork and training of our K9 unit was instrumental in bringing this incident to a safe and controlled conclusion,” one official said in a statement to the press.
The use of K9s in such situations remains a common practice across U.S. police departments, especially when suspects flee on foot or hide in difficult-to-reach areas. Police dogs are trained not only to track down individuals but also to use controlled force when necessary.
This incident has once again highlighted the dangers involved in police pursuits and the role police K9s play in ensuring officer and public safety.
Public Safety Advisory
Police departments often remind citizens that fleeing from law enforcement puts everyone at risk — including drivers, officers, and innocent bystanders. The DMPD urged anyone in possession of a stolen vehicle or involved in criminal activity to surrender peacefully and avoid escalating the situation.
About Police K9 Use
Law enforcement K9s are typically trained for several months in specialized academies, where they learn to detect narcotics, track suspects, and assist in apprehensions. The Des Moines Police Department’s K9 unit is regularly called upon to support high-risk operations like Tuesday night’s pursuit.
