A 23-year-old man accused of fatally shooting Kara Welsh, a 21-year-old star gymnast at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, appeared in court on Monday, marking the first public hearing in this tragic case that has shocked the community and the nation.

The fatal shooting took place on August 30, 2024, at Welsh’s off-campus apartment in Whitewater, Wisconsin. Kara Welsh was a well-known athlete and a two-time All-American NCAA Division III national vault champion. Her sudden death has left friends, teammates, and the university community in deep mourning.
Chad Richards, 23, the accused, was arrested shortly after the incident. According to the criminal complaint, Richards and Welsh were engaged in an argument when Welsh reportedly grabbed a handgun from a nightstand.
