Android, which boasts its distinctive interface and capabilities, is the preferred choice of the majority of mobile phone manufacturers. Huawei defied the prevailing trend by creating Harmony OS; however, it was a necessity as a result of geopolitical constraints. Huawei has encountered significant obstacles in the development of a platform that serves as an alternative to Android, despite its extensive resources.
Other phone operating systems, including webOS and Windows Phone, have also been abandoned.
According to Techcrunch, Nothing, a mobile manufacturer that is renowned for its unconventional approach to market standards, is currently contemplating the development of its own operating system. Carl Pei, the company’s founder and CEO, verified during Techcrunch Disrupt 2024 that Nothing is investigating the potential of a proprietary Nothing OS.
Pei criticized the duopoly that Google and Apple possess. “We are contemplating our approach to this situation and the possibility of establishing a unique entity.” “Some form of operating system,” he stated. The objective is to generate a new revenue stream and enhance Nothing’s influence on the industry.
Pei observed that a proprietary operating system would not only provide the company with greater control over the user experience but also be more profitable than hardware, which is characterized by its high costs and risks. It has already developed an intriguing skin for its Android phones, which is referred to as “Nothing OS” (refer to the aforementioned).
He clarified that the advancement of AI technology has simplified the process of creating operating systems. He also stated that the user experience cannot be enhanced without addressing the technical fundamentals, such as hardware drivers and essential components.
