Woman Arrested in Fatal Hit-and-run of Indian Student in Connecticut, Charged With Dodging Responsibility

A 41-year-old woman has been detained in connection with the fatal hit-and-run of an Indian student in Connecticut last year. Jill Augelli was arrested on November 18 in connection with the October 2023 death of Priyanshu Agwal, a 23-year-old international student at the University of New Haven.

According to the Hartford Courant, she has been charged with one count of dodging responsibility, which resulted in death.

Agwal was just a few months away from finishing graduate school and looking for work when he was killed in a hit-and-run, according to the report.

At a news conference on Monday, the New Haven Police Department reported the arrest of the alleged driver involved in the incident. At the news conference, Agwal’s brother, Aman, discussed how he has missed him every day for the past year since the accident.

“I just want to say I miss my brother every day,” he told me. According to the story, he continues to dream about his sibling. He stated he alternates between having fond recollections of his sister and feeling sorry.

According to Aman, the motorist did not stop following the incident. “I feel like she didn’t try to stop and it led to a major injury,” he said.

According to the Courant, New Haven Mayor Justin Elicker said Priyanshu Agwal’s family characterized him as a person with a “big smile” and an “outgoing, charismatic personality” who had many friends.

He was “loved by many” and had “his whole life ahead of him,” according to Elicker, who also stated that he was applying for employment at the time of his death and had “big dreams” of living in the US.

Elicker further stated that “thanks to Priyanshu Agwal and his family deciding to donate his heart,” he was able to save someone else’s life.

“And so that heart is beating in someone else’s body now,” according to Elicker. “So even though he lost his life, part of his life is giving someone else a life today, and that we’re grateful for as well.” According to New Haven Police Chief Karl Jacobson, police did not have enough evidence to arrest Augelli at the time and “had to work to put her behind the driver’s seat during the crash”.

According to the Courant, investigators obtained GPS data from her cell phone carrier, which purportedly revealed she was “in the vicinity” of the crash when it occurred. Forensic testing allegedly revealed Agwal’s DNA on Augelli’s automobile.

Agwal was driving an electric scooter around 11 p.m. on October 18, 2023, when he was hit by a car at an intersection. According to the complaint, the driver did not stop and instead continued driving.

Agwal was transported to Yale New Haven Hospital, where he was declared dead about a week later.

The following day, investigators discovered the crashed automobile in Naugatuck. According to the report, authorities determined that Augelli was the registered owner of the automobile.

Augelli remains in custody on a USD 100,000 bond and is set to appear in New Haven Superior Court on Tuesday.

According to the University of New Haven, Priyanshu Agwal, 23, was pursuing a master’s degree in business analytics after moving to the United States in 2022 from Deoli, Rajasthan. He had worked as a business analyst intern for an IT company.

Elicker said he thinks Priyanshu Agwal’s tale will serve to emphasize the significance of safe driving and the vital necessity to stop and help when accidents occur. “If you flee, we will track you down and hold you accountable,” Elicker stated in the report.
