RALEIGH, N.C. — A Youngsville man has been sentenced to 19 years in federal prison for his role in an extensive drug trafficking operation involving cocaine, fentanyl, and marijuana. Samuel McCoy Oakley Jr., 47, received the sentence after pleading guilty to multiple charges, including conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute significant quantities of these controlled substances, as well as possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.
Investigation Uncovers Extensive Drug Network
The investigation, initiated in September 2022 by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in collaboration with federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies, targeted a drug trafficking organization (DTO) operating within the Eastern District of North Carolina. Authorities identified Oakley and his co-conspirators as key figures responsible for distributing narcotics sourced from New York and New Jersey.
Surveillance efforts revealed frequent visits by unidentified individuals to Oakley’s residence, often carrying bags and departing shortly thereafter. Subsequent traffic stops of these individuals uncovered marijuana and cash, further implicating Oakley in the distribution network.
Wiretaps Reveal Incriminating Conversations
Court documents detail wiretap interceptions where Oakley discussed the sale of cocaine and fentanyl with associates. In one notable instance in May 2023, Oakley referred to purchasing “knowledge,” a term used to denote a specific brand of fentanyl. Following this conversation, a courier associated with Oakley traveled from Charlotte to his residence, then proceeded to New York. Upon the courier’s return to North Carolina, law enforcement conducted a vehicle search, uncovering over 5 kilograms of cocaine and 600 grams of fentanyl concealed within a hidden compartment. The fentanyl packages were notably stamped with the word “Knowledge.”
Search Warrant Leads to Significant Seizures
On July 19, 2023, authorities executed a search warrant at Oakley’s residence, resulting in the seizure of more than 2 kilograms of cocaine hidden in the attic insulation. Additionally, law enforcement recovered two 9mm handguns—one loaded—a semiautomatic rifle, several rounds of ammunition, and over $35,000 in cash.
The investigation concluded that between July 2022 and July 2023, Oakley was responsible for distributing over 168 kilograms of cocaine, more than 7 kilograms of fentanyl, and approximately 4 kilograms of marijuana.
Collaborative Effort Yields Conviction
This case was part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDETF) operation, aiming to identify, disrupt, and dismantle high-level drug traffickers and criminal organizations. The collaborative approach leverages the strengths of federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies against complex criminal networks.
Daniel P. Bubar, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of North Carolina, emphasized the significance of the sentencing, stating, “This conviction underscores our commitment to holding accountable those who flood our communities with dangerous narcotics and perpetuate violence.”
Community Impact and Response
The successful prosecution of Oakley highlights the persistent efforts of law enforcement to combat drug trafficking and its associated dangers. The distribution of substances like fentanyl poses a severe threat to public health, contributing to the ongoing opioid crisis affecting communities nationwide.
Residents of Youngsville and surrounding areas have expressed relief at the dismantling of this drug network. Local community leaders are hopeful that such actions will deter future illicit activities and promote safer neighborhoods.
Looking Ahead
While Oakley’s sentencing marks a significant victory in the fight against drug trafficking, authorities acknowledge that continued vigilance is necessary. Law enforcement agencies remain dedicated to identifying and prosecuting individuals involved in the distribution of illegal substances, aiming to prevent further harm to the community.
The case serves as a reminder of the critical role that inter-agency cooperation plays in addressing complex criminal enterprises. By pooling resources and expertise, agencies can more effectively combat the multifaceted challenges posed by drug trafficking organizations.
